The Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES), has officially launched the Basic Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (BSTEM) Programme for Basic School Teachers at the Eusbeth Conference Hall in Sunyani.

The landmark initiative is designed to revolutionize the teaching and learning of STEM subjects at the basic school level by providing teachers with practical skills in coding, artificial intelligence, renewable energy, and robotics. Over the next 18 months, 8,800 teachers from 4,400 basic schools will undergo specialized training to empower them with modern tools and methodologies.

Speaking at the launch, the Minister of Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, underscored the government’s commitment to building a knowledge-driven economy. He announced that modern STEM laboratories will be established across the country to support the programme.

“This initiative forms part of government’s reset agenda to nurture critical thinkers, problem solvers, and innovators who can tackle national challenges such as climate change and illegal mining,” he stated.

The Director-General of GES, Prof. Ernest Kofi Davies, emphasized the broader vision of the programme, noting that it seeks to produce 21st-century graduates with balanced knowledge, skills, and values. According to him, Ghanaian learners must be equipped to compete on the global stage while remaining innovative and creative.

Implementation of the BSTEM project is being carried out in partnership with ITECH Global, which will supply ICT equipment and digital tools to junior high schools under the programme. Teachers will undergo nine days of intensive training before returning to their respective schools to mentor colleagues and facilitate the integration of BSTEM practices into teaching.

Education stakeholders have described the launch as a bold step towards transforming Ghana’s education system, nurturing talents, and preparing the next generation of leaders for the challenges and opportunities of the future.
