The government is set to inaugurate a dedicated task force to fast-track the re-establishment of a national airline—an initiative viewed as a cornerstone of the country’s broader development agenda to stimulate economic growth and attract investment.

The high-level task force, operating under the directive of President John Dramani Mahama and the Ministry of Transport, will focus on mobilizing private capital, forging international partnerships, and removing regulatory bottlenecks to expedite the launch of the proposed airline.

The revival of a national carrier is seen by policymakers as a catalyst for boosting tourism, expanding trade links, and positioning the country as a regional aviation hub in West Africa.

Ghana has lacked a national airline since the collapse of Ghana International Airlines in 2010, and before that, Ghana Airways in 2004.

Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe emphasized earlier this year that, given Ghana’s current fiscal constraints, a public-private partnership model is essential for delivering the airline project without overburdening the state.

The absence of a flagship carrier has long been viewed as a missed opportunity to leverage air transport for national development.

Momentum for a revival gained new energy in 2022, when Ashanti Airlines was selected as the government’s strategic partner. The upcoming task force is expected to build on this foundation by drawing in more stakeholders and enhancing investor confidence.
