Tamale South Member of Parliament and Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has pledged to take over the sponsorship of 47 medical students who were previously supported by the late Tamale Central MP, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed.
The announcement was made during the Third Day Funeral Rites (Adua) held in Tamale in honour of Dr. Murtala, who tragically lost his life on August 6 in a Ghana Armed Forces helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region. He was among eight victims of the accident.
Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, after listening to the tributes of the 47 medical students who were being sponsored by the late Dr. Murtala Mohammed, decided to continue the sponsorship to honour the wishes of his late younger brother.
Addressing mourners, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu assured the affected students of his full commitment to ensuring they complete their medical education without financial difficulties. He described the gesture as a tribute to the legacy of Dr. Murtala, who was widely admired for his dedication to education, youth empowerment, and community development.
The beneficiaries expressed deep gratitude to the late MP for his unwavering support, describing him as a selfless leader who believed in investing in the next generation of professionals.
“May Allah be pleased with his soul,” Haruna prayed, adding that continuing this sponsorship is not only a moral duty but also a way of keeping alive the late MP’s vision for a better Ghana.
