Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has visited the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge) following the altercation that occurred over the weekend between a patient and some health workers.
In a statement after his visit, the Minister said:
“Yesterday, I visited the Greater Accra Regional Hospital to personally ascertain the altercation that occurred over the weekend between a patient and some health workers. I strongly condemn any attack on health workers. I have also directed a reassessment of security at the hospital. Furthermore, I met with both parties involved and instructed my officers to thoroughly investigate the incident. The government of President John Mahama is committed to resetting the Health Sector.”
The Minister assured management and staff of his commitment to their safety, while emphasizing that the protection of health workers remains a top priority.
Earlier, the Ministry of Health issued a press statement, signed by Deputy Director and Spokesperson Tony Goodman, condemning the attack at the Emergency Department of the hospital. The Ministry described the incident as an act of interference, aggression, and assault that undermines critical healthcare delivery.
The statement outlined immediate steps being taken, including beefing up security at the hospital and investigating the reported delays in care that may have contributed to the confrontation.
Democracy Hub Responds
Civil society group Democracy Hub (FixTheCountry) has also reacted, acknowledging that one of its activists, Mr. Ralph Afful Williams popularly known as Fellow Ghanaians was connected to the incident.
In a public statement, the group noted that the Health Minister had already held preliminary meetings, including one with Mr. Williams, and has constituted a committee to investigate the matter.
“We will await the findings of the committee to inform any further steps or public commentary. Democracy Hub remains committed to a transparent process, accountability, and the rule of law,” the group said.
Nurses and Midwives Demand Arrest
The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), however, has taken a firmer stance. Its General Secretary, Dr. David Tenkorang Twum, has called for the immediate arrest of Mr. Williams.
“We are asking the government to get Ralph arrested in 48 hours or we will advise ourselves,” Dr. Tenkorang Twum warned.
This ultimatum highlights the rising tensions between healthcare professionals and activist groups as investigations continue. Both government authorities and civil society actors are awaiting the committee’s findings to determine the next course of action.
