Former Member of Parliament for Anyaa-Sowutuom, Dr. Dickson Adomako-Kissi, has issued a bold call to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, demanding accountability ahead of the highly anticipated Akwatia by-election.
In an interview with GHOne TV, Dr. Adomako-Kissi emphasized the crucial role of the Ghana Police Service in ensuring a peaceful, free, and fair electoral process. He stated categorically that if the IGP fails to maintain law and order during the by-election, he should be prepared to resign from his position.
“The peace and security of the Akwatia by-election lie squarely on the shoulders of the IGP. If he fails to ensure calm and fairness, he should respectfully resign. We cannot allow any form of electoral violence or intimidation in our democratic process,” he told GHOne.
The former legislator added that recent tensions surrounding by-elections in Ghana have raised public concerns about the credibility and security of the electoral system. He therefore urged the police administration to deploy adequate security personnel, remain neutral, and act swiftly against any group or individual attempting to disrupt the process.
Political observers see the Akwatia by-election as a critical test for the Electoral Commission and security agencies, especially as Ghana moves closer to the 2028 general elections.
Dr. Adomako-Kissi’s remarks have sparked debate on political accountability and the expectations placed on public officers, particularly in upholding Ghana’s democratic values.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service has assured the public of its readiness to provide maximum security before, during, and after the by-election. The IGP is yet to officially respond to the call.
The Akwatia by-election is expected to draw national attention, as political parties intensify efforts to secure victory in the strategic Eastern Region constituency.
