Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak has condemned violence and chaotic activities that ensued during the Ablekuma North election rerun last Friday, July 11, 2025.
The minister, in an address during the first Government accountability series today, July 14 categorically condemned that act of violence that erupted within some polling stations within the constituency stating vehemently that video clips have been shared with the IGP and the Ghana Police Service to ensure that initiators of the violence would be brought to book.
Chaos and violence that erupted at the Ablekuma North polling centers were targeted at some politicians, notable personalities and the members of the media. The first attack was made on a media personality from EIB network, The reporter Kwabena Agyekum Banahene was reportedly slapped by a police officer at the pentecost North Ordokor 2 polling center without any form of confrontation. Subsequently, some other media personalities from recognized media houses were also attacked during the violence.
Then, the NPP candidate, Nana Akua Afriyieh and former MP for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson were equally assaulted during the conduction of the rerun.
Underscoring the essence of a peaceful election environment devoid of any form of violence and intimidation, Muntaka Mubarak have vowed to prosecute identified persons involved in the chaos no matter their political affiliation.
Reflectively, the minister analyzed the impact the recent chaos at Ablekuma North may have during the Akwatia by-election. “This is also a wake-up call for our security agencies to know that probably what happened gives our security agencies the opportunity to even plan better towards Akwatia” he said.
The Member of parliament for the Akwatia constituency, Ernest Yaw Kumi passed on Monday, July 7, 2025 calling for the need for a by-election to select a representation for the constituency.
Hon. Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak have assured that security services in Akwatia will use the Ablekuma North rerun as a guide towards the conduction of the Akwatia by-election. “All I can assure the people of Akwatia is that we will use Ablekuma North as a case study to review how we operate in Akwatia, to make sure that the citizens are free to cast their votes and express their will without fear or favour.” he ended on his remark.
