Kanton Senior High School has staged an inspiring comeback to the prestigious National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) after dominating the 2025 Upper West regional qualifiers with a commanding performance.
The Tumu-based school clinched first place in their contest with 41 points, outclassing Queen of Peace SHS, who managed 28 points, and Daffiama SHS, who trailed with 15 points. This victory not only guarantees Kanton SHS a spot at the national championship in October but also signals a strong return after failing to qualify in 2024.
Their qualification rekindles the spirit of their memorable 2021 campaign, where they stunned many by advancing to the quarter-final stage—an unprecedented feat for the school. That run earned them national recognition as the “best performing school from a deprived community.”
This year’s qualification holds emotional weight for the school, marking a return to form and ambition. Team members attributed their success to relentless preparation and a renewed determination after last year’s disappointment.
“We’ve been through setbacks, but we never gave up. This time, we’re not just participating — we’re aiming for the trophy,” one of the contestants remarked after the win.
Meanwhile, Queen of Peace SHS, a consistent qualifier in recent years, was unable to match the sharp execution of Kanton SHS, while Daffiama SHS continues to chase its first-ever national qualification.
With their latest victory, Kanton SHS has reasserted itself as a formidable force in the Upper West academic circuit, raising hopes of another deep run at the national level.
