Kpando Senior High School from the Volta Region has emerged champion of the fifth National Senior High Schools Renewable Energy Challenge in Accra.
The school topped five other finalists by developing projects focused on land degradation and water pollution, utilizing renewable energy technologies.
Organized by the Energy Commission, Ghana Education Service, and partners, the challenge themed “Application of Renewable Energy Technologies in Solving Land Degradation and Water Pollution” saw Kpando SHS score 85%.
They received GH₵10,000, a plaque, LED streetlights, GAST books, solar lamps, and a 5kw solar PV system.
Dabokpa Technical Institute placed second with 82%, while St. James Seminary SHS came third with 81%. Other participating schools received various prizes, including cash awards, solar products, and certificates.
Second Lady Mrs. Samira Bawumia emphasized the need for innovation to address environmental degradation, citing Ghana’s $6 billion annual loss.
She advocated for clean cooking methods and promised continued partnership to provide modern biomass kitchens.
Deputy Energy Minister Collins Adomako-Mensah assured the Energy Commission of the Ministry’s support, pledging 600 streetlights and 1000 solar alarms for future challenges.
Executive Secretary Oscar Amonoo-Neizer highlighted the initiative’s goal to promote renewable energy and empower the next generation of innovators.
