Ghanaian highlife star Kuami Eugene has humorously appealed to President John Dramani Mahama to ease up on the cedi’s recent appreciation against the US dollar, citing its impact on his foreign currency savings.
In a social media post, Kuami expressed mixed feelings about the situation:
“We beg Pres. John Mahama, slow down small—my dollar reserves all dey go waste,” he wrote, adding, “I’m happy and sad at the same time.”
Despite the hit to his dollar savings, the musician acknowledged the upside of a stronger local currency for the country.
Meanwhile, Ghanaian actor Van Vicker has publicly commended President Mahama for the cedi’s impressive performance.
In a Facebook post dated May 28, 2025, Van Vicker stated:
“Mr. President, I must congratulate you on the strengthening of the Ghana cedis on the world market. Ayekoo.”
He pointed out that although multiple theories have been proposed to explain the currency’s resurgence, the key fact is that it has appreciated significantly—from around GHC17 to the dollar a few months ago to approximately GHC10 today.
Van Vicker also addressed skeptics, especially Ghanaians living abroad who may not welcome the change, saying it would be self-serving to overlook the progress.
“This is not a political statement. It is an acknowledgement of a good job done so far. Call a spade a spade. Give credit to whom credit is due,” he said.
Expressing hope that the gains will be sustained, the actor added:
“Your Excellency JM, if you can take us back to 2007, heerrrh like e go be ‘kerker’.”
