Award-winning Ghanaian artiste Kuami Eugene has shared how a seemingly ordinary trip to the Volta Region in 2016 became the pivotal moment that shaped his journey to stardom.
Speaking on media personality Doreen Avio’s YouTube show, the former Lynx Entertainment signee opened up about his humble beginnings and the challenges he faced before rising to fame. The interview, held in his private studio, offered a rare glimpse into the early struggles of the “Angela” hitmaker.
Kuami Eugene, born Eugene Marfo, credited the church as his first training ground. He revealed that it was within the church that he learned to play several musical instruments and developed the foundation of his craft. However, he noted that despite the immense spiritual and musical growth, there were hardly any financial rewards.
“People recognized my talent and often invited me to play at their private events, but the money I earned could only cover transport or, at best, food,” he recalled.
Things took a dramatic turn when he embarked on a spontaneous trip to the Volta Region with a friend in 2016 a journey he now describes as a life-altering moment.
“After returning to Accra, I auditioned for MTN Hitmaker, and that’s where everything changed,” he said.
Kuami Eugene went on to become the second runner-up on the music reality show. The exposure he gained caught the attention of Lynx Entertainment, leading to a signing that propelled him into the mainstream.
With Lynx, his rise was meteoric. In his debut year, he won the Unsung Artiste of the Year at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA). He followed up the next year by winning New Artiste of the Year, and in a record-breaking third year, he took home the coveted Artiste of the Year award.
Though he remained tight-lipped about the specific reason for his 2016 visit to the Volta Region, Kuami Eugene maintains that the trip was a defining turning point in his career.
