Veteran Kumawood director and producer, Jackson K. Bentum, has strongly responded to recent criticism from actor and TV presenter Big Akwes, who questioned the casting of Kwadwo Nkansah, popularly known as Lilwin, as the lead actor in the upcoming film Ibrahim Traoré: The Last African Hero.
In a viral video, Big Akwes took a swipe at the casting decision, claiming that Lilwin was not the right fit for the role and suggesting that his selection was influenced by the fact that he was also producing the film. He further described Lilwin’s repeated choice of playing lead roles in his own productions as “boring” and “predictable.”
Reacting to these comments in an interview with Papa Jay of Poleeno Multimedia, Jackson K. Bentum did not mince words. He labeled criticisms of his casting choices as “senseless” and firmly defended his professional judgment.
“When I started casting actors, many of the stars today hadn’t even entered the industry,” Bentum said. “I gave first roles to the likes of Kyeiwaa, Emelia Brobbey, and Vivian Jill Lawrence. If I thought Big Akwes was suitable for the lead in Ibrahim Traoré, I would have cast him but I didn’t, and that should tell you something.”
The seasoned filmmaker emphasized that casting decisions are not based on personal relationships or popularity but on who best embodies the character. He maintained that Lilwin was the most suitable actor for the role, both in stature and performance.
“Casting is about who can bring the character to life,” Bentum stressed. “Lilwin fits this role perfectly.”
