Veteran highlife artist Kwabena Kwabena has alleged that there is a deliberate effort within the gospel music community to sideline his latest EP, God of Restoration.
Speaking in a recent interview, the musician revealed that he had received credible information suggesting a coordinated agenda to ignore his gospel-themed project simply because he is considered a secular artist.
“From a very reliable source, I’ve learned that there’s an agenda within the gospel fraternity not to support this EP,” he said. “But I have a message for anyone thinking that way: I made this project to thank the Almighty for everything He’s done for me – for the talent, for the ability to support my family, and for sustaining me in this career for over 20 years.”
Kwabena Kwabena expressed disappointment over what he perceives as resistance from gospel circles toward secular artists venturing into gospel music. He pointed out that this attitude seems particularly strong in Ghana.
“It’s sad. After releasing Bie Kwan, I’ve tried to ignore the chatter, but I hear the comments. It seems as though the gospel fraternity has an issue with a so-called secular artist creating gospel music – and I really don’t understand why,” he said.
Despite the apparent lack of support, Kwabena Kwabena remains confident in the divine backing behind his new project.
“You don’t know what God has done for me, so let me praise Him. If there’s a gospel caucus in Ghana that’s decided not to promote my work because I’m a secular artist, that’s their choice. I didn’t make this EP for them – I made it for God.”
