Ghanaian hiplife artist, Kwaw kesse has endorsed Ghana’s newly introduced GH¢1 Energy Sector Amendment levy which is alternatively referred to as “dumsor” levy.
In a video spoted on Instagram, the artist in what seemed to be an interview revealed that he would choose the “dumsor levy” over the electronic transfer levy which was introduced by the previous government.
Justifying reasons for his stance, the artist elaborated that initially a litre of petrol was sold for GH¢16.00 but with this current government reducing the price to GH¢12.00 per litre, the government has significantly reduced the price and is worth given GH¢1.00 on every litre of petrol that is bought in order to solve the power crisis plaguing energy sector.
Notably the singer revealed that the GH¢ 1 levy introduced by the current government is reasonable. “Eventhough others have politicised it, to me if we are building a great nation it makes sense.” he stressed further advising individuals to avoid politicizing the issue.
He further stated categorically that his analysis are being made from the view point of an [ordinary] Ghanaian rather than a party supporter and urged the entire Ghanaian populace to rally behind the “dumsor” levy for the good of the nation.
Last Tuesday, June 2 parliament passed the Energy Sector Levy (Amendment) Bill now referred to as the “dumsor” levy aimed at adding up GH¢1 to every litre of fuel purchased at the pumps.
This has been met with backlash from members of the minority caucus in parliament likening the levy to the electronic transfer levy which was scrapped by the current government.
The dumsor levy have been met with criticism from the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC), indicating that the said levy will financially strain consumers.
The Ghana Private Roads and Transport Union, GPRTU on the other hand strongly opposed the levy and even intended to embark on a strike on June 10, however upon engagement with the Ministry of Energy, the intended strike has been called off.
The “dumsor” levy is expected to take effect on Monday 16, June 2025.
