Former President John Dramani Mahama has reiterated the need for enhanced physical and economic development in the Ashanti Region, particularly in its capital, Kumasi. Speaking at the National Dialogue, he emphasized the importance of improving infrastructure to support the region’s growth and ensure a better quality of life for its people.
Mahama highlighted that Ashanti is the second most populous region in Ghana, with Kumasi being the second-largest city. Historically, the region has been a hub for culture, commerce, and industry, and he stressed the need to sustain and expand its role in Ghana’s economic landscape.
“We must also focus on the physical and economic development of our country and our region. Ashanti has historically been a center of culture, commerce, and industry, and we must ensure that this continues to thrive,” Mahama stated.
One of his key priorities is infrastructure development, which he believes is crucial for Kumasi’s progress. He assured the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, that the Sewua Hospital would be completed this year. According to him, this project will help decongest the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), allowing for necessary rehabilitation work to continue at the major health facility.
“I have spoken to the managers of Euroget Invest, the contractors, and they have assured me that they will resume work in earnest at the Afari Military Hospital to ensure the speedy completion of that facility,” Mahama added.
His call for development has sparked discussions on the need for more government investment in Ashanti, particularly in infrastructure, healthcare, and job creation. Many residents hope that these assurances will translate into real improvements that will uplift Kumasi and the entire region.
