National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama has defended his party’s decision to protest against the Electoral Commission (EC) over concerns about the voters’ register’s credibility.
During his Greater Accra Region tour, Mahama clarified that the protest aims to ensure a transparent and peaceful electoral process, not personally attack EC commissioners.
“We’re seeking peace throughout the election process,” Mahama emphasized. “Our concerns about the EC’s performance are crucial for a credible election.”
The NDC leader urged Ghanaians to join the September 17 demonstration, stressing that:
- The protest seeks EC transparency to ensure a peaceful election.
- Addressing voters’ register discrepancies is essential.
- The EC must fulfill its obligations properly.
Mahama called on NDC members nationwide to mobilize at EC offices, pressing the Commission to rectify register inaccuracies.
“We’ve identified significant irregularities,” Mahama noted. “For peace to prevail, the EC must address these issues swiftly.”
The NDC has formally notified the Ghana Police Service of its intention to demonstrate in Accra on September 17, 2024, advocating for free, fair, transparent, and peaceful elections.
