President-Elect John Dramani Mahama’s Transition Team has expressed concerns over last-minute recruitments and payments in some public institutions.

According to Mr. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the team’s spokesperson, these actions could have severe fiscal repercussions for the incoming administration.

Speaking after the team’s initial engagement, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu stated that the transition team had identified several issues, including a GH₵240 million payment to an entity linked to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

He criticized the timing and scale of the payment, urging for its suspension until further scrutiny is completed.

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu emphasized that the incoming government should make critical financial decisions, such as this payment.

“Good governance requires that the incoming government is given the opportunity to make these decisions,” he said.

The transition team also flagged the fiscal implications of last-minute recruitment processes across ministries, departments, and agencies.

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu warned that the timing of these recruitments could have severe fiscal implications on the incoming government, and urged for a halt to these actions.

The government side has agreed to put these actions on hold, and the transition team will “forcefully insist that this is a dangerous precedent,” according to Mr. Kwakye Ofosu.

He also highlighted the need for broader consultations to address these matters, emphasizing the incoming administration’s responsibility to safeguard the public purse amidst an already fragile economic situation.
