The Manhyia Palace has released an official statement announcing the completion of the final phase of mediation efforts led by His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, aimed at resolving the long-standing Bawku chieftaincy crisis. The concluding engagement brought together the main contending factions for a face-to-face dialogue at the Manhyia Palace Jubilee Hall in Kumasi.

According to the statement signed by the Chief of Staff, Kofi Badu, the Asantehene hosted delegations representing the Naayiri, Overlord of Mamprugu, and the Bawku Naaba, Zugraan Asigri Abugrago Azoka II.

The Naayiri’s delegation was led by Chief Tarana John Wuni Grumah, Paramount Chief of Tarana Traditional Area, while Naba Tambis Baalug, Paramount Chief of Pusiga, headed the delegation on behalf of the Bawku Naaba and the Kusasi people. Hon. Cletus Avoka served as spokesperson for the Kusasi delegation, with Dr. Issah representing the Naayiri and Mamprusis. Both sides included Chiefs, Lawyers, Academics, Opinion Leaders, and Youth Leaders.

The statement noted that Otumfuo Osei Tutu II had spent several months listening to the concerns and arguments of both parties in separate sittings. The final session brought the factions together to speak directly with one another as the Asantehene sought a lasting pathway to peace in the troubled traditional area.

The meeting was described as cordial, with both sides acknowledging that they are “one people who have no reason to be at war with each other.” His Majesty commended the delegations for their maturity and urged them to begin preparing their followers to embrace peace regardless of the final outcome of the mediation.

Otumfuo further cautioned leaders to work toward eliminating the culture of violence and disorder that has gripped the area, emphasizing the need for unity and coexistence.

The Asantehene also announced that he would submit a detailed report and proposals to President John Dramani Mahama in the coming days. He expressed hope that the President would act swiftly and convene a comprehensive meeting of all stakeholders to announce the final resolutions.

The Manhyia Palace reiterated its commitment to supporting national peace initiatives and expressed optimism that the Bawku conflict, which has persisted for decades, can finally be resolved through dialogue, cooperation, and mutual respect.
