Former President John Mahama has urged the government to end the militarization of Ghana’s elections, describing it as a recipe for chaos.
Mr Mahama emphasized the need for peaceful elections at the 2024 Peace Campaign organized by the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council, Christian Council, and Office of the National Chief Imam.
He said that the deployment of armed military and security operatives to polling and coalition centers undermines the country’s electoral sanity.
Mr Mahama also stressed the importance of impartiality and neutrality in electoral processes and dispute resolution.
“Justice is a necessary imperative for peace,” he noted.
The former president pledged his commitment and that of the National Democratic Congress to uphold peace before, during, and after the December 7, 2024 elections.
“We have a strong stake in maintaining the peace of Ghana and will work for a peaceful Ghana that fosters progress and happiness for every citizen,” Mahama assured.
Meanwhile, Mr Samuel Tettey, Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission in charge of Operations, assured that the EC’s activities have been transparent and open, with continued stakeholder engagement for a fair electoral process.
Mr. Tettey urged political party leaders to be circumspect in their utterances to avoid undermining the country’s electoral process and peace.
