The Minority Caucus in Parliament has accused the Mahama government of prioritizing the persecution of political opponents, particularly those from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the previous administration.
According to the caucus, the government’s first cabinet meeting centered on discussions to use state institutions to target officials from the previous administration.
This allegation is further substantiated by the swift and aggressive actions taken by security agencies against NPP activists.
The Minority Caucus condemned these actions, stating that they are not about accountability but rather a form of “political vengeance” designed to divert attention from the government’s failure to implement its promised policies.
The caucus emphasized the importance of accountability in governance but stressed that the pursuit of justice must adhere to due process and the rule of law. They criticized the recent trend of forcibly detaining individuals without proper legal procedures, drawing parallels with authoritarian regimes.
“We remind the government that it has a four-year mandate to fulfill its promises to the Ghanaian people,” the caucus said. “This period should be dedicated to fostering development, ensuring peace, and upholding stability, rather than engaging in political witch hunts.”
The Minority Caucus vowed to defend the democratic rights of all Ghanaians and urged the government to prioritize unity, respect for the rule of law, and the welfare of its citizens.
“If the Mahama administration is confident in its governance abilities, it must focus on delivering on its mandate, not on waging a politically-motivated witch-hunt,” the caucus stated. “Ghana’s democracy must not be reduced to a regime of political vendettas and abuse of power.”
