MoTCCA Set To Recover All Looted Cultural Artifacts.

The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts (MoTCCA) has expressed awareness of some missing and or stolen Ghanaian cultural artifacts and is set to embark on procedures to recover these missing cultural treasures.

To that end the ministry has inaugurated a national focal team to lead in the restitution and reparation of Ghana’s looted cultural artifacts. This team has been charged to reclaim old cultural artifacts and treasures that are in the possession of private individuals rather than the state.

The sector minister, Dzifa Abla Gomashie who constituted the team at the launch reiterated that this new charge should not be considered as merely recovering old artifacts however, it is a step towards restoring national identity, dignity, and historical continuity. She has therefore urged the youth to strongly rally behind the vision.

Also at the launch, renowned archaeologist, Prof. Kojo Gavua highlighted key achievements that has been made in the reparation and restitution of these lost artifacts. He listed…;

  1. Returns from Fowler Museum.
  2. Offers from Durban Museum (South Africa)
    and has notably registered that the country is working on restitution of some cultural artifacts from the Netherlands and Germany .

Additionally, National Cultural Programmes Officer with UNESCO, Carl Ampah also presenting at the launch consequently lauded the country for its legal framework that has enabled successful reparations and restitution of valuable Ghanaian artifacts and treasures. The focal team experts from academia, legal institutions, foreign affairs, and international bodies (UNESCO ) have been charged to recover all looted artifacts by identifying, negotiating and facilitating the return of these important National treasures back into the country.
