Nana Otuo Owoahene Acheampong, the Executive Director of the National Commission on Culture, launched the 2024 National Festival of Arts and Culture (NAFAC) on Tuesday. He urged stakeholders to enhance the culture and creative industry for better participation in the global market for creative goods and services.
The festival will be held from October 25 to 31 in Techiman, the capital of the Bono East Region, under the theme: “Beyond NAFAC @ 60: Harnessing Culture, the Pivot for Ghana’s Democracy and Sustainable Development.”
Acheampong stated that the festival would offer a platform for stakeholders in the arts and culture sectors to engage, showcase their talents and creativity, and highlight the values of Ghana’s heritage. He emphasized the importance of Ghana’s cultural heritage in shaping its governance and democracy and encouraged citizens to uphold it.
The festival will feature a grand durbar, conferences and seminars, women’s and girls’ dialogues, master classes, musical concerts, and traditional games. Additionally, there will be an art and craft exhibition, youth day, international friendship night, celebration of Regional Days, and the ‘Mr. and Mrs. NAFAC’ event.
Mark Okraku-Mantey, the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MoTAC), urged the National Planning Committee to elevate NAFAC into a premier event that attracts private sector involvement and investments. He highlighted the need to focus on both tangible cultural aspects (such as food, fashion, and instruments) and intangible aspects, particularly those that influence positive behavioral changes.
Okraku-Mantey pointed out that Ghana’s cultural issues, including corruption, are deeply rooted in behavior, which in turn shapes culture.
Kwasi Adu-Gyan, the Bono East Regional Minister, noted that NAFAC 2024 promotes inclusivity. He emphasized that through collective efforts and inclusivity, Ghana can fully leverage the power of its culture. He assured that the Bono East Region is prepared to host the event and showcase its rich culture to Africa and the world.
