Recent fire outbreaks in Ghana’s markets have resulted in significant financial losses, with the country losing millions of cedis. The incidents have raised concerns over the safety and security of traders and their goods.
In response, the Kumasi City Market Traders Union (KCMTU) has partnered with the Ghana Police Service to implement security measures aimed at preventing fire outbreaks.
The union has also engaged the Ashanti Regional Police Command to increase patrols within market areas.
The KCMTU has advised traders to close their shops and vacate the premises by 7:00 pm to prevent fires.
Additionally, the union has called on the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) to intensify fire-safety education for traders.
The GNFS has expressed concern over the ongoing reconstruction of Kantamanto Market, citing a lack of consultation and proper fire safety measures.
According to the GNFS, the use of wood in the rebuilding process is particularly concerning, as it is highly flammable. The service has advised that the reconstruction process be paused to allow for proper planning and the incorporation of fire-resistant materials and safety systems.
The KCMTU’s efforts to prevent fire outbreaks in Ghana’s markets are commendable, and their partnership with the Ghana Police Service is a step in the right direction.
