The National Democratic Congress (NDC) group in Parliament, led by Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has vowed to fiercely protect their newly acquired majority status.

Dr. Ato Forson made this clear during the maiden media conference in Parliament, stating that they will not back down, retreat, or surrender their lawfully earned status.

He emphasized that his side will continue to uphold their responsibility to the people, and nothing will change this position.

The NDC’s majority status was solidified after the Speaker, Mr Alban Bagbin declared four seats vacant due to the actions of the MPs in question, which breached article 97(1)(g) and (h) of the constitution and Order 18 of the Standing Orders.

This declaration has altered the configuration of the 8th Parliament, with the NPP now having 135 Members of Parliament and the NDC having 136.

Dr. Ato Forson reiterated that the Speaker’s decision to declare the four seats vacant was a lawful exercise of his responsibility, derived from the 1992 constitution and the Standing Orders of Parliament.

He noted that any interference with the business of Parliament is unlawful, unacceptable, and shall be resisted.

The NDC remains committed to serving the ordinary Ghanaian, Dr. Ato Forson said, emphasizing that they have never hidden their position on this matter.

With their new majority status, the NDC now constitutes the Majority Caucus in the 8th Parliament, while the NPP group in Parliament is now the Minority Caucus.
