The former Majority Leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Suame Member of Parliament (MP) Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, in a surprising turn of events, has disclosed that he voluntarily relinquished his position to prevent a deepening divide within the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, he had received advance warning from approximately 80 MPs that President Akufo-Addo had intended to remove him as Majority Leader.

Despite having the support of many MPs, he chose not to contest the decision, opting instead to resign and avoid exacerbating internal party tensions.

Sources close to the matter indicate that President Akufo-Addo’s concerns about the NPP’s declining influence in the Central Region prompted the leadership change.

The President reportedly believed that Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who hails from the Central Region, would be a more strategic choice to counter the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) growing influence in the region.

Sources however noted that Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu’s decision to step down has significant implications for the NPP’s parliamentary leadership and the country’s political landscape.

Sources however indicated that the development is expected to spark intense debate and analysis among political pundits and observers.
