Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has announced that the house will implement the 24 hour economy policy in parliament.
Taking his turn during the official presentation of the final 24-hour economy policy document at the office of the president, The speaker announced that the move is intended to create more job opportunities and to reduce the workload of staff in parliament. “This will allow more people to work here and will help reduce unemployment. I can assure you that the load of work here is unimaginable” he said.
He emphasized that the said consideration is in line with the recent adjustment of parliamentary working hours from the previous 10am to 2pm. “I recall my response to a concern of the staff that
because we change our sitting hours to two, it’s going to compel them to stay longer into the night and they were saying that, that will be disadvantageous to them
because it means they are going to work more hours” he further clarified.
“This means they are going to work more hours; they will be reporting at 8:00 a.m. and may be going home at 10:00 p.m. or sometimes 11:00p.m, particularly those in the official division of the House.” he added.
He noted that the 8 hour shift based system will be introduced once the policy is launched in order to reduce the work overload in the house.
