Police Announce Major Roadblocks in Accra, Provide Alternative Routes

The Ghana Police Service has announced the closure of several key roads in the Greater Accra Region. These roadblocks will be in effect from September 21 to 24, 2024, as part of the Police Special Operations initiative.

In a statement released on Friday, September 10, the Police outlined the affected routes and traffic diversions, with officers from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) assigned to guide motorists.

The Police also urged pedestrians to avoid the stretch from the AU Roundabout to the 37 Roundabout. Special arrangements will be in place for individuals accessing the 37 Military Hospital, TV3, and residences within the affected area during this period.

Key road closures and alternative routes include:

  1. CBD to Independence Avenue & Liberation Road: Traffic will be blocked at the AU Roundabout.
  2. AU Roundabout to Castle Road: Motorists will be redirected through Castle Road to Ridge Roundabout, onto the Kanda Highway, and through Gold House Traffic Light (Kawukudi). Alternatively, drivers can link Lokko Street to Independence Avenue towards Labone.
  3. AU Roundabout to Second Avenue (GI): Traffic will be diverted towards the Ring Road Central, passing in front of the Poke Headquarters, Dankwa Circle, and Cantonments Road, through to Ghana International School, and along Second Circular Road to Giffard Road (El-Wak Traffic Light).
  4. Madina to Accra Traffic: Traffic from Madina will terminate at the 37 Roundabout and be diverted to Obasanjo Highway, Gold House Traffic Light, and Dr. Liman Highway (Kanda Highway) to Ridge Roundabout and Castle Road to Accra Central.
  5. 37 Roundabout Diversion: Traffic from 37 Roundabout will be rerouted via Giffard Road (Burma Camp Road) to Second Circular Road, passing in front of Ghana International School, towards Cantonments Road and Dankwa Circle.
  6. Trade Fair Diversion: Motorists can use Giffard Road towards Trade Fair, continuing along Beach Road to the Central Business District.
  7. Presidential Drive (Behind TV3): This road will be blocked at Kanda Post Office Junction, and motorists will be directed to use Dr. Liman Highway (Kanda Highway) for alternative routes.
  8. Obasanjo Highway: Traffic will be diverted at Gold House Traffic Light onto Dr. Liman Highway and beyond.
  9. Prudential Bank Road: This road, from the Ring Road towards TV3, will also be blocked.

Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead, use the outlined alternative routes, and adhere to police instructions to minimize disruptions during this period.
