Ten suspects arrested in connection with a series of financial crimes targeting banks particularly rural banks have been paraded before the media at the Ghana Police Headquarters in Accra. The suspects, who arrived in a Black Maria van, are said to have been part of a sophisticated syndicate operating across multiple regions.
Addressing the press, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), COP Lydia Yaa Donkor, disclosed that the syndicate had carried out coordinated attacks on several banks. She noted that while ten members have been apprehended, two additional suspects remain at large and are currently being pursued by security agencies.
“The group strategically targeted rural banks, exploiting weaknesses in security systems and internal operations,” COP Donkor explained. She assured the public that investigations are ongoing to uncover the full extent of the crimes and to bring all perpetrators to justice.
The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, also briefed the press, detailing how the syndicate was dismantled. He revealed that the Police Service relied heavily on intelligence-gathering, surveillance operations, and information provided by informants to track down the suspects.
“For close to a year, these criminals were actively involved in robbing financial institutions in the Western, Eastern, Ashanti, and Ahafo regions,” the IGP stated. “Through careful monitoring and coordinated operations, our officers were able to apprehend them without major incident.”
He further assured Ghanaians of the police administration’s commitment to safeguarding the financial sector and protecting lives and property. He urged banks, especially rural banks, to strengthen internal security measures and collaborate closely with the police.
The suspects are currently in police custody as investigations continue. Authorities have pledged to update the public on the progress of the case and the pursuit of the two remaining fugitives.
