President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has granted executive approval for the upgrade of several districts and municipalities in Ghana.
This move is aimed at enhancing administrative efficiency and local governance in these areas, aligning with the government’s broader decentralization agenda.
The following municipalities have been elevated to metropolises: Ho Municipal Assembly, Sunyani Municipal Assembly, New Juaben Municipal Assembly and Wa Municipal Assembly.
The following districts have also been upgraded to municipalities: Offinso North District Assembly, Birem North District Assembly, Karaga District Assembly.
This development is in line with the legal provisions outlined in Act 936, which provides the framework for the establishment and administration of districts and municipalities in Ghana.
The upgrade of these districts and municipalities is part of the government’s broader decentralization agenda, aimed at promoting local governance and administrative efficiency.
The Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development (MLGRD) released a statement on Wednesday, December 4, announcing the upgrade of the districts and municipalities.
“The Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development was pleased to announce that the President has granted executive approval for the upgrade of several districts and municipalities,” the statement read.
Stakeholders have welcomed the upgrade of the districts and municipalities, saying it will bring about significant improvements in local governance and administrative efficiency.
