President John Dramani Mahama has congratulated Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie on his appointment as Chief Justice of the Republic of Ghana, describing the moment as a significant milestone for the country’s justice system.
In a message to the newly sworn-in Chief Justice, President Mahama highlighted the profound responsibility of the office, noting that Justice Baffoe-Bonnie now stands “at the intersection of law, history, and service.” He emphasized that the expectations of the Ghanaian people are high, matched only by their hope for a just, fair, and independent Judiciary.
President Mahama called on the Chief Justice to demonstrate unwavering courage, especially when faced with difficult or unpopular decisions. Such courage, he said, is essential to safeguarding the credibility of the courts and strengthening the pillars of democracy.
He further urged Justice Baffoe-Bonnie to “guard jealously the institutional integrity and independence of the Judiciary,” stressing that these values remain vital to ensuring justice is served without fear, favour, or political influence.
Above all, the President reminded him of the human dimension of judicial work. “Always remember that every file on your desk and every case in your courts represent human lives, families, and futures,” he noted, reinforcing the need for empathy and fairness in administering justice.
Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s appointment has been widely welcomed, with many expressing confidence that his extensive experience and reputation for professionalism will advance judicial reforms and enhance public trust in Ghana’s legal system.
As he assumes his new role, the nation looks to him to provide strong, principled leadership that upholds the rule of law and protects the integrity of one of Ghana’s most important democratic institutions.
