Ghana’s President, John Dramani Mahama, continued his Good Neighbourliness Tour on Sunday, March 9, 2025, with a diplomatic visit to Niger, where he engaged in high-level discussions with President Abdourahamane Tchiani.
The meeting, held in Niamey, focused on key regional issues, including security cooperation in the Sahel, trade enhancement, and strengthening bilateral relations. With the Sahel facing persistent threats from terrorism and political instability, Mahama and Tchiani underscored the urgent need for deeper collaboration among West African nations.
One of the major highlights of their discussions was the security situation in the Sahel region. Terrorism, armed insurgencies, and cross-border criminal activities continue to destabilize the region, affecting both economic growth and civilian safety. President Mahama and President Tchiani reaffirmed their commitment to collective security measures, emphasizing intelligence-sharing, military cooperation, and joint strategies to combat extremist groups.
Trade was another key topic of discussion, with both leaders recognizing the need for stronger economic ties between Ghana and Niger. They explored ways to improve cross-border trade, enhance economic cooperation, and facilitate investments that would benefit both nations.
As part of efforts to boost regional trade, Mahama reiterated the importance of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), urging greater commitment from West African states to leverage the agreement for mutual economic prosperity.
President Mahama’s visit also sought to deepen the long-standing relationship between Ghana and Niger. The two countries have historically shared strong diplomatic and economic ties, and this meeting reinforced their mutual interests in fostering peace, development, and regional stability.
The Good Neighbourliness Tour reflects President Mahama’s broader agenda of promoting African unity, strengthening ECOWAS relations, and advancing collaborative solutions to common challenges.
