Coordinator of Black Star Experience, Rex Omar has responded to comments made by the speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagin in relation to the term “Detty December” – A festive season widely recognized in the country.

The speaker on May 1, 2025 as part of labour day celebration seized the opportunity to register his displeasure with the term “Detty December” describing the occasion as a pretext to promoting illicit behavior amongst the youth in Ghana.

According to Bagbin, during his visit overseas, an American lady described her anticipation to visit Ghana during “Detty December “, which she described as a season where “people come into Ghana from all over the world, do whatever they want for free, and then go back.”

Based on this interpretation, the speaker noted that terminologies like “Dirty” [instead of Detty] December is the reason for the surge of substance abuse in the country and raised a call to action to silence such celebrations.

“No wonder ‘Red’ is now in Ghana. As leaders, we have not yet accepted Tramadol, and now they want us to accept Red. This is what is happening, and it’s destroying our country. We must all stand up and fight it” he stated.

Meanwhile, Rex Omar in a recent media interaction on Daybreak hits cleared the air on the issue. He countered Bagbins interpretations elaborating that the term “Detty December” stands for unlimited celebration rather than the corrupted interpretations he was served with.

He apologized for the misconception that tagged along with naming the celebration. “He should bear with us. We are creatives, we are always creating, we’re changing languages to mean different things and all that, so it’s not D-I-R-T-Y, December is D-E-T-T-Y, it’s unrestricted celebration” he clarified.

He further stressed on the fact the country is governed with laws, defaulters of the law under the pretext of celebrating “Detty December ” will be arrested.

Notably, Detty December Celebration in Ghana is particularly observed during the festive season annually. The celebration is marked by the display of music, arts and other form of culture projections which attracts people from within the country and the diaspora.
