Shortage of School Furnitures a Major Challenge in Wa West – Director of Education

By: Emmanuel Amoah

Amatus D. Tug-uu, the District Director of Education for Wa West, has expressed concern over the severe lack of school furniture in many basic schools within the district. He emphasized that this shortage is significantly hindering effective teaching and learning.

Mr. Tug-uu highlighted the district’s substantial deficit in school infrastructure and furniture, noting that this shortfall is negatively impacting educational outcomes.

“In some schools, pupils are forced to lie on the bare floor to learn how to write, which is affecting their writing skills, The entire district is facing a severe furniture shortage.” He said.

In an interview with the Daily Graphic, Mr. Tug-uu estimated that the district requires around 10,000 dual desks to meet the current demand in schools.

“Securing at least 10,000 dual desks would greatly improve the situation, providing most schools with the necessary furniture for pupils,” he explained. “During the recent terminal examinations, I observed students lying on their bellies to write their exams. This is unacceptable.”

In addition to the lack of furniture, Mr. Tug-uu pointed out that some classrooms have deteriorated to the point of becoming hazardous due to years of neglect and inadequate maintenance.

Despite numerous efforts in the past to address these issues, they have not produced significant results. As a result, Mr. Tug-uu is urging the public and organizations to assist the district in addressing these pressing challenges.

He acknowledged that the district assembly is aware of the difficulties facing the education sector but lacks the resources to provide the necessary support. Consequently, he is calling on the public for assistance.

Mr. Tug-uu emphasized the importance of providing children with a solid educational foundation to prepare them for the future. He believes that equipping schools with the necessary infrastructure and furniture is a crucial step in achieving this goal.
