The Ghana Education Service (GES) in the Volta Region has indefinitely shut down Sokode Senior High Technical School after violent clashes erupted between students and residents of the Sokode community.

The confrontation, which began on Saturday, February 22, reportedly stemmed from unresolved disputes, resulting in injuries on both sides. Among the injured was a journalist from Ho-based Swiss FM, who sustained severe wounds while covering the incident. Several students and community members also suffered varying degrees of injuries.

In response to the unrest, police and military personnel have been deployed to the school and surrounding areas to restore order and prevent further violence.

Speaking to Citi News, Volta Regional GES Director Francis Yao Agbemeadi confirmed the closure, stressing that the decision was taken to ensure the safety of students and staff while investigations are conducted.

“Given the nature of the situation, we decided to close down the school as a precautionary measure to safeguard the students. Additionally, arrangements have been made to transport them safely to their respective destinations,” he stated.

Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances that led to the violent clashes, and further measures will be taken based on their findings.
