Multiple award-winning gospel singer, songwriter, philanthropist, producer, television presenter and author, Sonnie Badu, has dismissed claims suggesting that it is inappropriate or senseless for individuals especially Christians to listen to secular music.
Addressing the growing debate around gospel artistes and their relationship with non-gospel content, Sonnie Badu stated clearly that the world does not revolve solely around gospel music, stressing that listening to secular songs does not automatically conflict with one’s faith or spiritual values.
According to him, music in its broadest sense is a universal language that reflects life, culture, emotions and experiences. He explained that while gospel music plays a critical role in worship and spiritual growth, it is unrealistic and misleading to assume that believers must completely isolate themselves from other genres of music.
“I listen to secular music,” Badu admitted, noting that exposure to different sounds and styles can be educational, inspiring and creatively beneficial, especially for musicians. He emphasized that maturity in faith is not measured by the genre of music one listens to, but by one’s character, conduct and personal relationship with God.
The UK-based Ghanaian gospel minister further cautioned against hypocrisy and selective spirituality, urging believers to focus less on outward appearances and more on living purposeful, impactful lives. He added that condemnation of secular music often overlooks the fact that many songs outside the gospel space carry positive messages about love, resilience, unity and social responsibility.
Sonnie Badu also encouraged gospel artistes to remain grounded in their calling while appreciating creativity across the global music industry. He stressed that being spiritually conscious does not mean being culturally disconnected.
His comments have sparked widespread discussion on social media, with many praising his honesty and balanced perspective, while others maintain that gospel ministers should strictly adhere to faith-based content. Nonetheless, Badu’s stance adds to the ongoing conversation about faith, freedom, and realism in modern Christian living.
