A devastating road accident has claimed the lives of at least 15 members of the Saviour Church of Ghana on the Atwedie stretch of the Kumasi-Accra highway, plunging the church and the entire community into mourning.
The fatal incident occurred on the afternoon of Monday, July 28, at approximately 2:30 p.m., when a vehicle transporting the church members collided head-on with a fuel tanker traveling in the opposite direction.
According to preliminary investigations, the church members were on their way back to Obogu in the Asante Akyem South Municipality after attending their denomination’s annual meeting held in the Eastern Region. Eyewitnesses and first responders described a harrowing scene of mangled metal and bodies strewn along the roadside.
Emergency services swiftly arrived at the scene to transport the injured to nearby hospitals, while the deceased were conveyed to the morgue. The full number of casualties, including the injured, is yet to be confirmed by the authorities.
Police and fire service officials have begun investigations into the cause of the crash, although initial reports indicate that one of the vehicles may have veered off its lane due to poor visibility or brake failure.
Family members, residents of Obogu, and church leaders have been left reeling from the tragedy. Several community members gathered at the church’s premises on Monday evening, offering prayers and comfort to the grieving families.
Local government officials and traditional authorities in the Asante Akyem South area have expressed their condolences and pledged support for the bereaved.
The accident adds to a growing concern over the frequency of road traffic incidents along the Kumasi-Accra highway, one of Ghana’s busiest and most accident-prone roads.
More details are expected to emerge in the coming days as investigations continue and the community prepares for mass funerals.
