Carving out time to turn off your devices, to disconnect from the wired world and engage with the real people who are all around you, is one of the best gifts you can give yourself. It is alarming to know that globally, people spend approximately 6 hours 40 minutes daily on their screens. The covid-19 pandemic have increased screen time usage drastically causing major interactions to be held on social media platforms rather than personal interaction.

Screen time is all about how long we are glued to our gadgets like smartphones, computers, and TVs. While technology can be great —especially with the shift from paper to digital in schools, offices, and churches—too much screen time can take a toll on our bodies and minds.

A clinical psychologist pointed out in 2023 that an MRI scan of a child who is addicted to screen time shows results similar to those of someone addicted to hard drugs. This is because both types of addiction affect the same portion of the human brain.

Excessive screen time poses health risks such as;

  1. Eye strain and vision problems.
  2. Insomia
  3. Anxiety and depression
  4. Social isolation
  5. Excessive weight gain due to restricted movements.
  6. Headaches and Migraines.

On the flip side, persons with screen time addiction can relieved by

  1. Frequent physical interactions.
  2. Finding physical hobbies(reading)
  3. Self discipline (Create tech-free zones)
  4. Use of mobile apps(eg; family time which automatically locks digital devices until sleep time is over.)

To wit, screen time is essential as it enhances learning, build networks and also serves as a vital source of entertainment however excessive screentime is detrimental to the human health.
