The Government of Ghana has issued a firm condemnation of the military coup in Guinea-Bissau, describing the November 26 takeover which forcibly removed President Umaro Sissoco Embaló from office as a direct assault on democratic governance in the subregion.

In an official press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, the Mahama administration expressed “strong and unequivocal” disapproval of the unconstitutional seizure of power by elements of Guinea-Bissau’s military. The statement emphasized that the action violates democratic norms and dangerously disrupts the electoral process that followed the country’s peaceful presidential and legislative elections held on November 23, 2025.

According to the statement, Ghana views the development with “profound concern,” citing deep dissatisfaction with what it called a brazen attempt to overturn the will of the people of Guinea-Bissau. The coup, it stressed, has derailed the country’s democratic trajectory and obstructed the anticipated announcement of election results originally scheduled for November 27.

The Government of Ghana is calling for the immediate restoration of constitutional order and has urged all actors involved to respect the democratic process. Any grievances related to the elections, it noted, must be resolved through peaceful, transparent, and legally recognized mechanisms.

The statement also highlighted Ghana’s insistence on the protection of civilians, foreign nationals, and especially officials of the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission currently stationed in Guinea-Bissau. Ensuring their safety and unhindered movement, the government said, must be treated as a matter of urgency.

Ghana further appealed to the people of Guinea-Bissau to remain calm, exercise restraint, and avoid actions that could escalate tensions. The government reaffirmed its full support for ECOWAS and the African Union as they coordinate a regional response in line with established protocols on democracy, good governance, and constitutional rule.

The Mahama administration reiterated Ghana’s unwavering commitment to defending democratic values across West Africa, stressing that unconstitutional changes of government undermine regional stability and must be firmly resisted.
