Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has officially declared his intention to contest for the position of National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), marking another significant development within the party following its internal elections.
His declaration comes after the successful presidential primaries of the NPP, which saw Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia emerge as the party’s presidential candidate. With the flagbearer now firmly chosen, Chairman Wontumi says the time has come for the party to also consolidate its leadership at the national level.
In a statement dated February 4, 2026, the Ashanti Regional Chairman explained that his decision followed deep personal reflection, consultations with party elders, and spiritual guidance. “Having consulted my Maker and sought the counsel of party elders, I hereby declare my intention to serve as National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party,” he stated.
Chairman Wontumi stressed that his ambition to lead the party nationally is not driven by personal interest but by a desire to strengthen, rebuild, and unify the NPP as it prepares for the 2028 general elections. He noted that with Dr. Bawumia leading the party as presidential candidate, strong, courageous, and grassroots-oriented leadership at the national level is crucial.
He described the leadership required at this stage as one rooted in the grassroots, one that values every party member from elders to the youth and is willing to make sacrifices for the collective good of the party.
“The road ahead will demand vision, courage, and unwavering determination. Leadership at this moment requires bravery the courage to stand firm, make difficult decisions, and be willing to lose everything if necessary for the NPP,” he said.
Chairman Wontumi expressed confidence in his preparedness and organizational strength, declaring that he is ready for the task ahead. He emphasized that his goal is to restore confidence within the party, energize the grassroots, and strategically position the NPP to win decisively in the 2028 elections.
“This is our moment to rise, to lead, and to deliver for the NPP,” he added.
The declaration is expected to further energize internal party discussions as the NPP moves from selecting its presidential candidate to shaping its national leadership. Chairman Wontumi concluded with a call for unity and prayers for the party, Ghana’s democracy, and the nation.
