The Government of Ghana has announced plans to officially rename the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) as Accra International Airport, Majority Leader of Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has revealed.
Speaking at a press conference, Mr. Ayariga stated that the renaming exercise is a deliberate policy decision by the government to redefine national symbols in line with Ghana’s democratic values and evolving national identity.
“We are changing the name of our airport from Kotorui-Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport,” the Majority Leader announced.
He explained that to give legal backing to the decision, the Minister for Transport will soon lay a bill before Parliament to effect the change.
“So a bill will be brought by the Minister for Transport for the name of the airport to be changed from Kotorui-Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport. So the Accra International Airport Bill will also come,” he added.
According to Mr. Ayariga, the proposed name, Accra International Airport, better reflects Ghana’s capital city as a global aviation hub and presents a more inclusive national image to the international community. He stressed that the move is not intended to erase Ghana’s history, but rather to reposition key national institutions in a manner consistent with the country’s democratic journey.
The Majority Leader assured the public that the renaming process will follow due parliamentary procedure, including debate and approval by lawmakers, before implementation.
The announcement has generated widespread public discussion, with mixed reactions from citizens, historians, and civil society groups. While some see the move as timely and progressive, others have called for broader national consultations before a final decision is taken.
Government officials say further details, including timelines and implementation plans, will be communicated once the proposed bill is presented and considered by Parliament.
