The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, , has disclosed that the government is considering a proposal that would require individuals in Ghana to verify their identity before accessing pornography websites.
According to the Minister, the proposed measure forms part of broader efforts to regulate online content and strengthen digital safety across the country, particularly to protect children from exposure to adult material.
Speaking on the proposal, Samuel George revealed that an ID verification policy for pornographic websites will be submitted to Cabinet for consideration. He explained that the policy is intended to prevent children from being exposed to explicit content online.
“An ID verification policy for pornographic sites will be submitted to Cabinet to prevent children from being exposed to such content,” the Minister stated.

Under the proposal, users seeking access to pornography websites may be required to provide a valid photo identification or undergo an identity verification process before being granted access. The measure is expected to introduce stricter age-verification requirements and greater accountability for online content providers.
The Minister emphasized that safeguarding minors in the digital space remains a key priority for the government. He noted that as internet access continues to expand, there is a growing need for policies that promote responsible online behavior while protecting vulnerable users from harmful content.
Although the proposal is still under consideration, further details regarding how the verification process would be implemented, what forms of identification would be accepted, and the timeline for its rollout have not yet been announced.
If approved by Cabinet, the policy could mark a significant step in Ghana’s efforts to enhance online safety and regulate access to adult content, aligning with similar measures being explored in several countries around the world.
