In a move that has brought significant relief to commuters, the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana has announced the suspension of a planned 15% increase in transport fares, which was scheduled to take effect on July 22, 2024.
David Agboado, Public Relations Officer of the Concerned Drivers Association, stated that the decision was made after careful reconsideration of the timing of the fare hike. He highlighted that the association did not want to exacerbate the financial difficulties faced by the public during these trying times. “We are committed to working in the best interest of the public and will revisit the fare increase at a more appropriate time,” Agboado emphasized.
This announcement comes as a welcome development for many commuters, who have been grappling with the rising cost of living. The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) had also advised commuters to disregard the initial announcement of the fare hike, reinforcing the collective effort to ease the public’s burden.
The suspension of the transport fare hike underscores the Concerned Drivers Association’s dedication to social responsibility and its responsiveness to public concerns. This decision is seen as a positive step towards maintaining social cohesion and stability amidst the current economic challenges.
