The Vice Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has generously contributed GHC50,000 to the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) Cancer Foundation in support of its ongoing campaign to assist cancer patients. The donation was made on Wednesday at the Foundation’s office in Accra.

The GNAT Cancer Foundation focuses on raising funds to support the treatment of cancer patients who are either teachers, spouses, or children of teachers. With the increasing number of cancer cases among teachers and their families, and the escalating costs of treatment, many affected individuals find it difficult to afford care. In light of these challenges, the Foundation has been actively soliciting funds to ease the burden of its members.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang, while presenting the donation in the form of a banker’s draft, praised GNAT for taking the initiative to establish the Cancer Foundation, which seeks to support members in need of critical medical assistance.

Recognizing the financial strain associated with cancer treatment, she stated, “As an educationist who appreciates the vital role of teachers in society, I am making this contribution to raise awareness and appeal to the public for more support.” She further called upon the public and unions to contribute to the cause, emphasizing the importance of empathy and collective responsibility in supporting teachers who have shaped many lives.

“I urge everyone, regardless of profession, to contribute to this fund, no matter how big or small, because we all pass through the hands of teachers at some point in life,” Prof. Opoku-Agyemang added.

Looking ahead, the NDC Vice Presidential candidate expressed hope that the GNAT Cancer Foundation will expand to become a national initiative, providing assistance to a wider range of individuals in need.

Additionally, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang encouraged the Foundation to incorporate preventive cancer care into its outreach efforts to further reduce the prevalence of the disease.

In response, the Chairman of the GNAT Cancer Foundation’s fundraising committee, Mr. Christian Yaw Adinkra, expressed gratitude for the generous donation and called on others to follow Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s example in supporting the Foundation’s mission.
