The police have said that there has been no shooting incident at the Kumasi office of the Electoral Commission and no demonstrator has been injured by the Police.

Chaos erupted in Kumasi as police deployed teargas to disperse National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters who clashed with law enforcement officers during the ‘Enough is Enough’ demonstration.

However, the Police said some demonstrators who went against the agreed arrangement by forcing their way into the compound of the EC office were restrained.

“We would like to take this opportunity to urge the media to be circumspect in their reportage,”

Meanwhile, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Aseidu Nketia, has said that the ‘Enough is enough’ nationwide demonstration organized by his party on Tuesday, September 17 is to ensure free, fair and transparent elections.

“Our demand is simple,” he said.

He added “We want the EC to ensure a free, fair, and transparent election and a credible register is central to that goal.

“We want nothing but transparent elections that will guarantee our right to choose our leaders. Without the right of self-determination, democracy is good as gone and every democracy at one point in time, comes under threat Ghana’s democracy is under serious threat now and we want to prevail.

“We shall overcome because every democracy has the risk of producing a tyrant but our ability to fight that tyrant and restore democracy once again is paramount and we shall prevail.

“Elections alone do not guarantee democracy, it is democratic-minded citizens who are ready to fight for them who can guarantee democracy.”

Ellembelle lawmaker Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah also said the demonstration was a call on the Electoral Commission to do the right thing ahead of the elections.

He says it is also a call for peace and stability in the country.

Speaking at the NDC’s ‘Enough is Enough’ demonstration against the EC in Sekondi-Takoradi, Buah emphasized the NDC’s call for the EC to address concerns raised by the parties to ensure a credible election.

“We want to safeguard our democracy. This call is for the peace and stability of our country. We know that the electoral commission is colluding with the NPP, so we are doing everything to stop it.

“We know that the register is not credible and we have asked for an independent audit. We think that is the only way to assure the people of Ghana of a credible register that will lead to transparent and credible elections,” he said.
