Mobile Money Operators Threaten Strike Over Galamsey Crisis

The Mobile Money Advocacy Group (MOMAG) has issued a stern warning to the government regarding the detrimental effects of illegal mining, known locally as galamsey.

During an appearance on Channel One TV’s “I Stand Against Galamsey” campaign on Monday, September 16, MOMAG representatives expressed their deep concerns. The campaign serves as a platform to amplify the voices of associations, organizations, and unions advocating for an end to illegal mining.

MOMAG has accused the government of failing to take decisive action against the environmental destruction caused by galamsey. The group warned that if the situation does not improve by the end of September, its members nationwide will suspend operations in protest.

Kingsley Amoako Atta, National Secretary of MOMAG, highlighted the significant impact such a strike could have on financial transactions across the country. “If the government remains inactive, MOMAG may be forced to embark on a nationwide strike. This will disrupt mobile money transactions, bill payments, salary disbursements, and hinder financial inclusion efforts,” Atta cautioned.

MOMAG also presented a list of demands, urging the government to:

  1. Declare a state of emergency over all water bodies.
  2. Revoke all mining leases that affect water bodies.
  3. Enforce existing mining laws and regulations.
  4. Provide alternative livelihoods for illegal miners.

The group’s demands underscore the urgency of addressing the galamsey crisis, which has been linked to severe environmental degradation, particularly the pollution of water bodies across the country.
