The National Peace Council has called upon Ghana’s security agencies and youth to prioritize peace and unity as the country approaches the December elections. This appeal was made during the commemoration of the 2024 International Day of Peace in Accra.

Dr. Ernest Adu-Gyamfi, Chairman of the National Peace Council, emphasized the crucial role peace plays in fostering societal progress and well-being. He urged all stakeholders to actively contribute to ensuring a smooth and peaceful election process.

“Let us ensure that our actions before, during, and after the elections reflect the culture of peace we’re committed to cultivating. Peace must be nurtured daily, not just during election periods,” Dr. Adu-Gyamfi stated.

Acknowledging the heightened tension that often accompanies elections, he stressed the importance of maintaining dialogue, tolerance, and unity throughout the electoral process.

Air Commodore David Anetey Akrong, Deputy Commandant of the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC), also spoke at the event. He underscored the value of peace, urging citizens to adopt an attitude that promotes a violence-free election.

He further emphasized that credible elections are built on inclusiveness, transparency, and accountability, urging security forces to diligently fulfill their responsibilities in maintaining law and order.

Charles Abani, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Ghana, commended the country’s steadfast commitment to peace in the face of global tensions. He specifically encouraged the youth to protect Ghana’s peace, highlighting that peace is an ongoing process.

“Peace is not a static condition but an active pursuit a deliberate process that requires strategic construction and nurturing of the social, political, and economic frameworks that promote harmony, justice, and coexistence,” Mr. Abani remarked.

The event served as a reminder of the collective responsibility in safeguarding the peace and stability that Ghana has long enjoyed.
