The Minister of Information, Fatimatu Abubakar, has called on journalists to exercise professionalism and avoid spreading inaccurate information during the upcoming December 7 elections.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Mrs. Abubakar emphasized the importance of media responsibility in ensuring a peaceful election process and sustaining Ghana’s democracy.
Mrs. Abubakar cautioned journalists against sensationalism and spreading fake news that could incite violence or unrest.
She also urged politicians to be mindful of their language and adhere to legal expectations throughout the electoral process.
The Minister expressed satisfaction with the current election campaign, noting a shift towards more issue-based discussions.
She encouraged voters to participate in the election and trust the electoral bodies to ensure a free and fair process.
Mrs. Abubakar emphasized the need for politicians to focus on the quality of their arguments rather than resorting to insults or inciting violence.
She also highlighted the importance of dialogue and peaceful resolution of conflicts in Ghana’s democratic progress.
As Ghana prepares for the December 7 elections, the Minister’s call for accuracy and professionalism in journalism echoes President Akufo-Addo’s reminder to journalists of their responsibility to safeguard the nation’s democracy.
