A total of 279 individuals have successfully filed for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) positions in 18 assemblies across the Volta Region. This comes after the close of nominations, with North Tongu District leading the pack with 40 applicants, followed by Ho Central with 22, and North Dayi with 18.
On the other end of the spectrum, Akatsi North had the fewest number of aspirants with just four, while Akatsi South had six, and Adaklu and Agotime Ziope each had eight.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued a statement tasking the regional vetting committee to ensure that all applicants meet the eligibility criteria for Members of Parliament as outlined in Article 94(3) (c) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.
The committee has also been directed to consider customary, geographical, and ethnic balance when shortlisting the top three candidates.
According to Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, National Secretary of the NDC, this approach aims to promote unity and rally each district around a common developmental agenda.
The selection process is expected to be guided by the principles of fairness, transparency, and inclusivity.
