President John Dramani Mahama has officially declared his assets, reinforcing his commitment to transparency and accountability in public office. The declaration was made at a formal ceremony at the Jubilee House, where the President submitted his completed asset declaration forms to the Auditor-General.

Speaking at the event, President Mahama emphasized the constitutional and legal requirements governing asset declarations. He cited Article 286 of the 1992 Constitution and the Public Office Holders (Declaration of Assets and Disqualifications) Act, which mandate all public office holders, including ministers, members of parliament, and judges, to declare their assets.

Expressing concern about the widespread lack of awareness among public officials regarding this obligation, the President announced decisive measures to ensure compliance. He directed the Chief of Staff to oversee the submission of asset declarations by all appointees by March 31, 2025. He warned that failure to comply would result in strict sanctions, including dismissal from office.

President Mahama stressed the importance of preventing corruption, noting that transparency is a powerful tool in combating graft. “While punishing corruption is necessary, preventing it is even more crucial,” he stated. “An effective asset declaration regime can significantly reduce corruption, which thrives in secrecy.”

To enhance the effectiveness of the asset declaration process, the President proposed a review of the current framework. He advocated for the public disclosure of declared assets both before and after public office to promote accountability and prevent unexplained wealth.

The President’s bold stance on asset declaration is expected to strengthen anti-corruption measures and promote integrity in governance.
