A devastating agrochemical spill has contaminated River Tordze, leaving thousands of residents without access to safe drinking water.

According to a press release issued by the Volta Regional Co-ordinating Council (VRCC), the spill occurred when a truck carrying agrochemicals overturned in Tove, Togo, releasing its toxic contents into the river.

The affected areas include numerous communities along the river, such as Kpedze, Luvudo, and Honuta, with the contamination extending into the River Volta.

Residents have been warned not to use the water for drinking, fishing, irrigation, or washing until further notice.

Augustus K. Awity, Chief Director of the VRCC, emphasized the urgency of assessing the contamination level before declaring the water safe for human activity.

“The VRCC is warning all individuals and communities that rely on River Tordze for drinking, fishing, irrigation, or washing to abstain from using the water until it is confirmed safe for human and animal consumption,” Awity stated.

The VRCC has instructed affected Municipal and District Assemblies to provide alternative water sources for impacted communities.

Authorities are expected to conduct environmental assessments to determine the full extent of the contamination and implement necessary remediation measures.

Residents have been urged to adhere strictly to the directive to avoid potential health hazards.

The situation also highlighted the need for effective measures to prevent such incidents and ensure the safe disposal of hazardous materials.
