Afenyo Markin Accuses Attorney General of Shielding NDC Officials at ‘Save the Judiciary’ Demo.

The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo Markin, has alleged that the Attorney General under the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government has become a partisan tool, deliberately shielding NDC officials from prosecution. He made these claims during the “Save the Judiciary” demonstration held in Accra on Monday.

The protest was organized by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), in collaboration with a coalition of opposition political parties and civil society groups. The event aimed to draw national attention to what organizers described as executive interference in the judiciary and the selective application of justice.

Addressing the demonstrators, Afenyo Markin expressed deep concern over the state of the justice system under the NDC administration, accusing the Attorney General of abandoning neutrality and protecting allies of the ruling party from accountability.

“The office of the Attorney General has been reduced to a partisan tool, sweeping away prosecutions against NDC officials,” Afenyo Markin stated. “This is not justice; this is political shielding, and it is dangerous for our democracy.”

He further claimed that the current administration was using its influence to silence investigations into corruption and other wrongdoing involving high-profile NDC figures.

“The people of Ghana deserve equal justice under the law. What we are seeing is a deliberate attempt to cripple the judiciary’s independence and turn it into a political pawn,” he added.

The Minority Leader’s comments have sparked sharp responses from NDC representatives, who have dismissed the allegations as baseless and politically motivated. Some legal experts have also called for evidence to support the claims, warning against the politicization of the judiciary.

The Attorney General’s office has yet to issue an official response.

The “Save the Judiciary” protest adds to growing political tension as the opposition ramps up pressure on the NDC government ahead of the next election. Organizers say the protest is only the beginning of a nationwide campaign to demand transparency, judicial independence, and accountability at the highest levels of government.
